McKinney CHL Services

by Sandy Keathley

McKinney Firearms Training was originally launched to teach people how to shoot. It's true that most people don't get formal training with a handgun. After all, it is just a "point-n-shoot" device. However, there are good reasons why people should seek out an instructor: they may not properly learn the safety rules on their own (or the reasons to be rigid about them), they may not know that the gun they bought is not suitable for their purposes, or is not suited to them, and there are certain of the fundamentals of shooting that are not intuitive.

While it has been enjoyable teaching in this arena, there is an ever-growing market for instruction relative to the Texas Concealed Handgun License. Even in a smaller town like McKinney, CHL instruction is in demand, so it seemed like a good fit to include that on my list of courses. It has been a surprise to me, how many people I already knew told me they had been thinking about it for some time.

Getting state certification to teach these classes was challenging, but enjoyable, especially getting to qualify on the huge firing range at the DPS Tactical Center in Georgetown.

Our bigger CHL classes are taught in Plano, but the McKinney CHL classes are seeing more traffic, including people who have previously taken a pistol class. We do have another website for the CHL classes, McKinney CHL, but have decided to not try to maintain separate sites, so this one now directs users to the main site.

Alas, prices for both the McKinney CHL and Plano CHL classes will be going up in September, and July classes are almost filled, so visitors who have been putting off getting their license are advised to sign up now for August.

Meanwhile, remember this tip: "aim small, miss small."
